colors dancing through the air

-- haiku by Fran Orput, Concord

This morning we were finally able to capture a somewhat feral young tabby cat with an old, old, old style flea collar around her neck.

We'd been trying to grab her and cut off that collar for about a month, after I first found that I could get but one finger under the collar.

Today, my husband held her and I got the sharpest kitchen scissors I had and cut off that stiff plastic collar. We guess that the cat had maybe another month before she would grow to full size and that collar would choke her to death.

Please ask people to put only breakaway collars on outdoor cats.

Yes, you go through many during a normal lifetime. But the alternative is a horrendous way in which to kill a cat.

I couldn't agree more!

Cats that are allowed to roam around outside should only be allowed to wear breakaway collars. that way, if/when your kitty catches its collar on something, it will break free ... and not be strangled.

Thanks for caring, and for rescuing that cat, and bringing this up!

The other night my husband and I sat on the patio at 11 p.m. enjoying the warm beautiful night.

We light up the yard with lights and rope lighting. a beautiful white butterfly joined us. Flying all over the yard and pool and checking us out for at least 15 minutes.

I reached out to touch him and could feel the flutter of his wings on my hand. it made us feel so close to nature, having a curious butterfly wondering why the night became day. We have a garden that is always alive with something day or night. I love that they enjoy my garden as much as I do.

Your white butterfly may have been a white moth ... not that it matters, since they both flutter around your yard, causing you the same amount of delight!

You and your husband have a garden for the same reason Lois and I have ours ... because we love creating our garden and working in it.

And we also take particular delight in figuring out how to share it with the local wild creatures in ways that allow all of us to enjoy it.

We usually have a lot of 4- to 6-inch-long lizards in the garden, but this summer they seem to have been driven off by a tribe of "pygmy lizards" that are only up to 2-inches-long. The bigger lizards were here in spring and early summer however they've been mostly supplanted by the smaller guys. any ideas what's up?

I'm guessing your regular lizards (fence lizards?) hatched a batch of eggs and those "pygmy lizards" are their babies.
