The Sol Kitchen and the Sunset Jazz Festival are bringing jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding to perform at 8:30 p.m. tonight at Knight Theater on Tryon Street in Charlotte.
This special indoor concert is part of the two-day Sunset Jazz Festival and Spalding's fist appearance in Charlotte. Tickets are $29.50 to $64.50. For more information or tickets, call 704-281-6335.
The festival will continue at 2 p.m. Saturday at Marshall Park at McDowell and Second streets in Charlotte. Performers include 5th & York, Shableek, the Queen's Collective and Elements of Jazz. Admission is free.
The State Art Collection: African-American Voice exhibition opens Oct. 1 at Clinton Junior College's Dalton Gallery and runs through Dec. 10.
The gallery is located at 1029 Crawford Road, Rock Hill. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. a preview of the artwork is available online at SouthCarolinaArts.com.
Coordinated by Harriett Green, visual arts director at the S.C. Arts Commission, the abbreviated exhibition includes 21 pieces of artwork from the 448-piece state art collection.
The pieces are by 16 African-American artists who range from self-taught, outsider artists like Sam Doyle, Leroy Marshall and Dan Robert Miller, to academically trained artists with established careers such as Leo Twiggs, Larry Lebby and Robert Spencer. the exhibit is free and open to the public.
Grammy-winning Kathy Mattea will be in concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Clover School District Auditorium as part of the Performing Arts Series.
Her new album "Coal" pays tribute to her coal mining heritage. She was raised in Charleston, W.Va., and her parents grew up on coal camps and both grandfathers were miners.

ZOOfari at Riverbanks
On Saturday, Oct, 2, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden will host its annual fundraiser ZOOfari from 7 to 11 p.m. at the zoo in Columbia.
Party-goers will find entertainment around every turn, with performances by DeVine from Living World Entertainment, Woyate West African Drum and Dance Company, and Palmetto Pans, University of South Carolina's steel drum band. a caricature artist will be on hand creating take-home portraits for guests. Food stations located throughout the park will feature menu items such as lump crab cake, pimento cheese pinwheels, sweet tea-infused Southern-style chicken, goat cheese and herb stuffed zucchini, tuna tartare and Dijon-crusted lamb chops. this year, Riverbanks will showcase some of the animals that benefit from fundraisers.
Timed presentations will occur every half hour until the live auction commences at 9 p.m. the live and silent auctions will take place under the covered pavilion at Safari Camp and feature many one-of-a-kind items and opportunities. On the auction block this year is the right to name the newest penguin at the zoo. Tickets are $85 for regular admission and $75 for Riverbanks members. Tickets are on sale at www.riverbanks.org.
